The Rope Dancer video

The Rope Dancer is a video (15:11 run time) commissioned in 2001 by the Penderecki String Quartet to accompany their performance of Sofia Gubaidulina's "The Rope Dancer" during the multi-media performance Le Minotaur. For other sections of the evening's performance, Stefan had created sequences of slide-dissolve sequences of still images, equating the idea of technology run amok with our car culture. Le Minotaur was presented for one night on September 28, 2001 in the Theatre Auditorium, Wilfrid Laurier University, in Waterloo, Ontario.

The visual work was projected onto the back wall of the performance space from a projector near the stage floor, allowing the shadows of the dancers of DanceTheatre David Earle to be cast upon the background (and also illuminating the dancers).

The story of Theseus' descent into the labyrinth with Ariadne unwinding thread so that he could find his way out of the maze once he killed the Minotaur is represented by a dizzying journey through a parking garage.
